Matt Bower
Team Leader, DWQR
Human factors in WQ Incidents

29 August 2025

Matt joined us to give a regulator’s perspective on water quality performance and where the next improvements need to come from.

While compliance levels are strong and customer complaints are reducing, human factors remain at the centre of many water quality incidents. From miscommunication and missed tasks to planning gaps and procedural slips, Matt explores why no one sets out to do a bad job, but without the right training, time, resources, and culture, mistakes can still happen.

It’s a fascinating discussion on how we can better support the people at the heart of drinking water quality.

Local Regeneration of GAC

1 August 2025

In this episode, we dive into a bold rethink of how we support the treatment of water. Paul shares details of a £1.4M Ofwat Innovation Fund project exploring local, chemical regeneration of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC), a greener, cheaper alternative to carbon-intensive thermal regeneration.

From lab trials at Swansea University to pilot plants at Welsh Water and Severn Trent, this could reshape how the industry tackles PFAS and other contaminants.

This innovative project is a collaboration between Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, Panton McLeod, Swansea University, Severn Trent, De Nora, Anglian Water Services, Affinity Water and United Utilities, bringing together industry, academia, and suppliers to rethink how GAC is managed.
